I have heard almost all of satriani's recorded work and have to say that this album does feature as one of my favourites. He shows a depth of emotion in his playing that is so soarly missed in this genre of music. A work of passion, emotion and heart & soul.

Sure, guitar-shredding was fairly popular, with technicians like Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinnie Moore receiving due credit in the world of neoclassical rock, but there was little variation between these artists and their lightning-speed scales, arpeggios and clasically inspired licks.

JOE SATRIANI - 1989 - Flying In A Blue Dream
Description:
I have heard all of Satch's albums (minus 'Time machine') and for me this is probably the greatest album he has ever done. If you've heard 'Surfing with the alien', this album will be no different, but Satch has many more different, interesting songs here. Straight-ahead shred-rock ('Back to shalla-bal' and 'One big rush'), some funk ('Bells of lal part 2' and 'Strange'), a bit of folk/country ('The feeling' and 'Phone call') and a bit of 80s metal ('Big bad moon'). Don't worry, 'cause Satch still uses great guitaring and solos. For me Satch is great at making amazing solos, but also making themmore… very musical, and not just a load of notes thrown together. He is very talented at composing songs, as well as being a great guitarist. He also includes his famous double handed tapping tecnique in the beautiful 'Day at the beach' and the not-so-good 'Headless', and the complex 'hand-holding-the-neck and hammer-on' tecnique in the fantastic 'Mystical potato head groove thing'.

Satriani is in my opinion, one of the finest guitarists around. He can compose some great tunes, from several different genres, and has a dazzling technique on his guitar which actually contributes itself to the melodies, rather than just sounding like guitar played really fast for the sake of it. It is definitely one of his better attributes in the fairly limited 'Guitar album' market.The Time machine is a 2 CD set, which contains one CD of live performances of some of his more wll-known tunes, and the other containing new material. The live CD is brilliant. Well recorded, and diverse. The songsmore… are not note-for-note repeats of the studio takes, and there is a lot more passion and expression in them. The new material CD also features some great stuff, much of which shows a more experimental side to Satriani's compositions. Not all the songs will appeal to everyone, whether they're fans of Satriani or not, but there are tunes here that are indicative of his style. There's the obligatory 'surf' song, fast-paced up-tempo radio-friendly rock, some tasteful acoustic music, and some off-the wall compositions that make up a good variety of music for Satriani fans.It is, however not the easiest album to get into. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's never heard of Satriani, or who 'kind of' likes his stuff. If you're expecting loads of interesting and dazzling guitar work set to some cracking compositions, though, you could do a lot worse than this....

I've owned this CD for quite a while and I have to say it is definitely one of my favorite CDs(even when compared to CDs with vocals). Like a previous reviewer said Satch's music doesn't need vocals to convey the emotion of the music across. He does an awesome job of that with his catchy riffs and screaming solos.
Although Satch's level of mastery of his instrument is nothing short of amazing not all of his music is that great. This CD has best mix of rock and slower songs. I myself love all things rock so this CD sits better with me than some of his other work(included his newest Super Collosalmore…).
If you are intested in getting into the world of Satch this is a great place to start. All the songs rock(especially my favorite Train of Angels!). Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Strange Beautiful Music--über-axeman Joe Satriani's eighth studio album (following on from the acclaim of Grammy-nudging Engines of Creation)--begins strangely and doesn't get beautiful until a third of the way through. Perhaps that's the result of a too-conscious effort to be that most elusive of things, "different". Openers "Oriental Melody" and "Belly Dancer" are every bit as Middle East as their titles suggest, but Satriani abandons this odd style with the kind of audacious whimsy that only a multi-million selling guitarist can do three tracks in, with the infinitely more interesting "Starrymore… Night". It's semi-acoustic with a much simpler arrangement, which demonstrates that, in this genre especially, less can definitely be more. His contemporaries have all carved out niches for themselves--from Santana's Latino-flecked demented noodling to Steve Vai's very strange but often very beautiful projects. However, no matter what Satriani tries (unless a completely acoustic album is on the cards--that would be interesting) there's nothing much a lead guitarist can really do to make things "different"--it's the same highly strung guitar with a scattering of strange effects--and at the end of the day they all sound like a buzzing Brian May with the capo on the eighth fret. If he really wanted to be different then he should have just hooked up a battered Jazzmaster to an overdrive and a fuzzbox, or unplugged altogether. --Ben Johncock

After the poorly received Engines Of Creation and Strange Beautiful Music, Satch returns to form with a vengeance with Is There Love In Space?. Like its predecessor, the record follows a more conventional rock direction but also retains the elements of quirkiness that peppered Joe's earlier works.In fact, while listening to this album, I couldn't help but feel that I'd heard much of the music before in Joe's back catalogue. But this was not a feeling of disappointment - more a sense of pleasure at how polished the overall album is. In every track the tone and rhythm guitars are absolutely spotmore… on, and Joe being Joe, only widdles when necessary (unlike Steve Vai who seems content to go off on endless tangents in his work).Particular highlights include Up In Flames, with the chorus containing some of the heaviest riffing I've heard in a rock song, never mind a Satriani song. Lifestyle is one of the two vocal tracks, and I'm pleased to say that Satch has finally got it right this time. I've never been a fan of his vocal tracks but both on this album are excellent. The lyrics are nowhere near as bad as his earliest efforts and there's a great boogie feel on I Like The Rain. If I Could Fly is simply one of the most beautiful pieces of instrumental guitar music I have heard. It's much like Flying In A Blue Dream, but even warmer thanks to the acoustic rhythm gutar and there's an adrenalin rush about the whole thing. Satch is so adept at doing 'rush' songs like these. Then you have The Souls Of Distortion, before an acoustic track, of which I'm not a fan. But overall the whole album is polished and superbly composed.

While a lot of guitar heroes sling their axes for the sole purpose of proving that they are the fastest shredder in the showroom, picking their myxolydian scales to the nth degree, on the ridiculously named Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock Satriani shines in his ability to hold back and write tasteful verse/chorus songs with memorable hooks. Like the majority of his songs in his ever growing catalog, most of these are technically impressive numbers that never go overboard with the showboating and rely on a sense of feeling rather than virtuoso technique. When you're consideredmore… a guitar god, restraint is a virtue. Of course he can zip along on the fretboard with the best of the best, but the trait that has always separated Satriani from the other guitarists gracing the cover of Guitar World for more than 20 years is his ability to blend technique with guitar lines that are melodic enough for a vocalist to sing. Thankfully, he never takes the microphone on this recording, but on the first half of the gentle and bluesy "Come on Baby," it's easy to imagine substituting his custom Ibanez with a human voice that coos the words "Come on baby, come on babe" on the choruses. Similarly, the "Diddle-Y-A-Doo-Dat" sounds like the title might suggest, starting out with some Yes style prog licks and flipping into a John Scofield-flavored jazz-funk jam with bends and pull-offs that are best described as "diddleys" and "doo-dats." Neither cut quite astounds, but both demonstrate his versatility on the instrument and his ability to adapt to the climates of various genres. Likewise, the flamenco-flavored "Andalusia" starts off as a warm "Spanish Fly" acoustic number, exploding into a furious distorted solo backed by longtime drummer Jeff Campitelli and former David Lee Roth bassist Matt Bissonette. Along with his backing band, Satch's son ZZ Satriani gets a taste of his Pop's spotlight, just like Wolfgang and Dweezil, and provides a few sax flutters on the semi-funky "Professor Satchafunklius." With the exception of these tracks, the remainder of the album is purely rockin', and doesn't vary much from his prior 12 releases. The anthemic "Overdriver" could be an outtake from Flying in a Blue Dream and will surely find a place in his G3 set list, "Musterion" sounds like a Not of this Earth moment, and the two-handed handiwork and blistering riffage on "Asik Vaysel" will definitely have air guitarists salivating. With the good comes the bad, and at the album's most embarrassing moment, "I Just Wanna Rock" advertises cornball clich�s with a proudly clanked cowbell, a talkbox Frampton-izing, and a boisterous crowd chant-along. This is a new low for Joe — practically an open letter admitting that he's OK with the idea of becoming pass�. At a time when his former pupil Steve Vai is experimenting with radical orchestral arrangements, it would be nice to see the professor branch even further away from his trademark style, ditch the '80s production, and try something more unconventional, but for the most part he's doing what he does best here, and fans will be content with that.
